Finding Happiness Without an Expiration Date

Thich Nhat Hanh

We spend years of our lives—and massive amounts of energy—building monuments to our happiness. We chase the perfect partner, the dream home, the corner office, and the social praise. But have you noticed the “Expiration Date” on these victories?

A promotion’s joy lasts barely three weeks. The thrill of a new home fades within three months. A compliment? It evaporates into thin air in just three hours.

We work so hard to create these conditions, yet they leave us cruelly and quickly. Why? Because this is Borrowed Happiness. When we borrow our joy from external conditions, we surrender our power to the variables of the world.

The Trap of External Variables

At Sentia Zen, we believe that the reason we feel “unhappy” is not that we lack possessions, but because we are trapped in a cycle of Craving and Resistance.

  • The Craving: The constant psychological urge to “find more” to feel complete.
  • The Resistance: The constant urge to “push away” anything that inconveniences our comfort.

These are just reactions of a fragile Ego trying to protect itself. We borrow conditions from the outside, mold them into something we can enjoy, and then suffer when they inevitably change. We know the cause, yet we struggle to stop, driven by a “darkness of greed”—the belief that the next “thing” will finally be the one that stays.

Defining True Happiness: The State of Zero Friction

True happiness—what ancient wisdom calls Peace-Joy does not come from external conditions. It comes from a specific state of the mind.

True happiness is the psychological state where you no longer feel the need to seek anything more, and you no longer feel the need to reject anything that is.

It is a state of Zero Friction. It is a heart that is content and accepting of all. It is “True” because it is generated from your own internal peace, making it independent of whether the world is currently “favorable” or “unfavorable.”

The Ordinary Miracle

We often overlook the person who has no power, no vast wealth, and no fame, yet carries a deep, radiant smile. This person has mastered the art of Deep Contact with the miraculous values of the present moment.

They understand that:

  • Happiness is not a future event; it is a current quality of mind.
  • Stability is not found in controlling the world, but in transforming the habits of craving and resistance.

The Practice of Dissolving the Ego

How do we reach this? It isn’t through a major life upheaval, but through the diligent practice of Mindfulness.

  1. Observing the Reaction: Recognize when your Ego is craving or resisting. Label it. Watch it. Do not serve it.
  2. Letting Go of the “Unnecessary”: Slowly release the needs and oppositions that don’t serve your core peace.
  3. Synchronizing with the Flow: As the small, defensive Ego melts away, you begin to move in harmony with the people and the world around you. Your happiness stops being a private, guarded treasure and becomes a boundless connection to the universe.

It Is Already Here

The quality of your mind determines the quality of your happiness. You don’t need to travel to a distant future or a different space to find it.

True happiness is not something you “get.” It is something you are when you stop fighting your life. It is available right now, in this breath, in this moment. The search is over. You are home.
